Meet The Captains

Captain James Frederick is a solo sailor who is currently circumnavigating onboard his 1965 Alberg 30 Sloop, SV TRITEIA. After purchasing the boat in 2017, he spent four years doing an extensive refit, one project at a time while also exploring the Channel Islands of California. During that time Frederick was also working on yacht deliveries as both crew and later as captain to gain ocean sailing experience and collect sea miles. By 2020 he had gained his Master License with the USCG and completed the refit of Triteia into a serious blue water cruising yacht.

Departing Los Angeles in August of 2021 bound for the Hawaiian Islands, about how way to the islands he struck a submerged object that broke Triteia’s rudder, leaving them adrift for three days, some 1000 miles from the nearest land; Oahu, Hawaii. Rigging up a drogue to steer by, the next 18 days Triteia held her course under reduced sail completing the 2300 mile passage after 32 days at sea.

After spending eight months in the Hawaiian Islands and completing the necessary repairs Frederick sailed for French Polynesia and on to American Samoa, Fiji and New Zealand where they spent a year cruising before crossing the Tasman Sea to Sydney, Australia. From Sydney, James made his way up the Australian Coast through to Indonesia doubled handed with a Kiwi crew member as far as Bali. Returning to Solo sailing, Frederick sailed on to Borneo, Singapore, Malaysia and up the Malacca Strait to Langkawi. In 2026 Triteia and James crossed the Indian Ocean from Phuket to Sri Lanka, Maldives, Seychelles, Mayotte, Madagascar, Mozambique arriving to South Africa. Covering more than 25k nautical miles since leaving Los Angeles.

In addition to solo sailing, James has also sailed as crew on yachts in the Orkney Islands, Swedish Archipelago, Åland Islands. He has sailed the Viking route from Newfoundland to Greenland and on to Iceland after transiting Prince Christian Sound in Southern Greenland. Frederick has crossed the Bermuda Triangle sailing from Puerto Rico to Bermuda to North Carolina. He has also sailed the entire west coast of the United States on boats from the Strait of Juan de Fuca to San Diego Bay.

James’ cruising is fully funded through weekly video uploads to his YouTube channel and with the support of his patrons. He also works as a writer for sailing magazines and self-publish books.

Captain Victoria, a USCG licensed captain, is lifelong sailor comes from a very long line of sailors that dates back to early 1900s on the east coast of the USA. Her Great Great uncle started the Little Egg Harbour Yacht Club in 1912 and sailed on his 42 ft sloop Maria with his kids and grandkids.

Her Mother, Mary Paul, grew up on sailing yachts as her father Jim Holt was an avid sailor who had crewed on a 5 masted Schooner that ran trade down to South America before WWII. He would go on to be one of the founding members and the first director of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. He was also one of the officials and a boatman for the 1968 Olympics for the sailing competitions held in Acapulco, Mexico.

Her father, Nicolas Paul, grew up sailing small boats on lakes in Ethiopia and would go on to a career as a sailor in the Navy. He currently owns a Catalina 32 in San Diego. Vicotria and her dad take sailing trips together in exotic places every few years.

Victoria grew up sailing in the Chesapeake during summer visits and has made an Atlantic crossing from Bermuda to the Azores. She has cruised in Southern California, The Bahamas, Fiji, Croatia, Montenegro, Malaysia, Thailand and the Seychelles. She is an active member of a Women’s sailing group in San Diego

Victoria works as an IT professional by day, managing projects involving multiple teams (read: working with many people in many different roles).

Her detail-oriented approach and easy-going nature offer newer sailors a path to learn and gain confidence. She loves nothing more than sharing her passion for sailing with others.
